A coconut husk contains two types of material that are coir fiber and Coir Pith. The Coir Pith binds the fiber material together. It is a very Spongy and Light material. Coir Pith can hold significantly high water than other materials like Rockwool and Peat Moss.
Coir Pith contains a very high content of lignin and the nutritional value of pith is very less and It needs to be enriched for use in agriculture purposes. The Coir Pith is generally used in combination with other materials like pearlite, cow dung, etc.
Using it before processing is not advisable. Coir Pith can either be enriched using microorganisms or needs to be composted. It is also advisable to remove salt content in Coir Pith by washing it in water before its application.
