What exactly is Sterilization of Coir Pith?

The Coir Pith needs to be sterilized before use because it may contain harmful unwanted Pathogens which may inhibit seedlings from growing or germinating.

The need for the Sterilization of Coir Pith is generally debated by various scientists of India. Some of the scientists in India say that it is not possible to sterilize Coir Pith as it will lead to its destruction.

What is generally meant by Sterilization?

Sterilization means destruction, killing, and elimination of all microorganisms. It is generally used in the food and medical industry for various industrial and research purposes.


Why is sterilization done for Coir Pith?

The sterilization is done to remove all the Pathogens(harmful fungi, larvae, and eggs of Pathogens) that are harmful to the plants can be eliminated. This process is generally used in India as this is generally demanded by farmers from nurseries because the plants here are at a growing stage and require a certain level of protection.


How is sterilization done?

Sterilization is done at a large scale in industries by passing steam over the coir pith and then packing in plastic bags before application . At a small scale level, the Coir Pith can be sterilized by placing a small amount of it in the oven at a high temperature for some time before using it.


What is Chemical Sterilization Of Coir pith?

In this method, the Coir Pith is generally treated with Bleaches and Hydrogen Peroxide for Sterilization. This method is not a popular one.


Is sterilization of Coir Pith really necessary?

Scientists from institutes like IIHR argue that it is not necessary for Sterilization and Coir pith can be directly used for application after fermentation. But scientists from CCRI advise for Sterilization. Practically both methods are employed by farmers currently.


How long can a sterilized Coir Pith Used?

It is generally advisable to use the sterilized Coir Pith within 6 months because storing wet coir pith for a long time can cause the building up of Pathogens which can harm the plants.
